Colour

Color is very important to us both aesthetically and practically. We use only the best hard-wearing emulsions, specially mixed to our own formulas which, over years of experience, we know to be long-lasting and durable.

You can either pick the colour yourself or our in-house designer can help guide you. However, in most cases, we have already visited your home, measured the interior and you have discussed the overall look and feel with our designer.

It's very important to us that the colour works and is in sync with its surroundings. Colour effects and glazing can make a huge difference to any room. We tend to choose whites and mid-greys because they are functional and contemporary. Creams and off-whites can give off hues of warm colours but essentially any colour can be warmed up by painting the wall behind it a deep red or vibrant green.

You can be more adventurous and add gold leaf against decorative detail. This was a much-practiced theme throughout the Georgian period as indeed was painting furniture. In fact, all woodwork was painted in the Georgian period apart from expensive hardwoods which were French polished.

In was not until the Shaker period in 1890 that natural woods escaped being painted principally because it was considered showing off and extravagant. The natural wood look is now considered more homely and envoirmentally friendly.

In 1920 the arrival of the Bauhaus in the Weimar / German Republic and the Dutch design school heralded a new era in design as well as the arrival of Modernism. This gave us modern thought processes and from this came bright colours, graphics against clinical black and white backgrounds and eventually the arrival of contemporary design.
